Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!
My boys are so excited to go trick-or-treating tonight they can hardly stand it.

You'd think they hadn't already gone trick-or-treating twice at parties within the last few days.

They wanted to dress as ghosts this year so we headed to a local thrift store, bought two pillowcases for $1 each, sewed the corners in at the top and cut holes for the face and arms and voila!... two ghost costumes!

They may not look professional but they sure made my boys happy.

On Saturday morning a friend and her family hosted a 5k to help raise money for their adoption so we threw on our costumes and joined in!
Nora's birth mother came with us and we had fun!
Here are some phone pictures.
I'll be leaving out the pictures with her in them to protect her privacy.

He was miserable during the run...

Then cheered up afterward when they got candy.

Hope you all have a happy Halloween!

Sleeping Baby

There's something so magical about a sleeping baby.
They fight it and fight it.
And fight it.
But once they fall asleep, my heavens, they look so peaceful.
We have an angel baby who really isn't hard when she is awake.
She is so smiley and really just cries when she is hungry or overly tired.
Our last baby (Jimmy) was so so hard, we were ready for anything when little Nora arrived but, luckily, she is a super easy going baby.
Phew.

Up until now Nora has kinda just slept whenever but we're trying to establish some order around here so we're attempting kind of a sleep schedule.
Which is where you come in.
I need some tips from you mothers out there.
How many naps did your babes have?  What was their sleep/awake schedule like during the day?
Do you ave any advise you could give me?
Please... share your wisdom.

A Happy October Indeed

Man, October is fun.
It's more fun than I remember it ever being before and I think that's because of my littles.
They are antsy with excitement over all of the fun things happening.
Halloween parties, scary decorations, painting pumpkins, bins of silly costumes, crunchy leaves to stomp on....
They get so excited about every little thing
And that is what is so fun for me.

I hope you're having a fun October.
:)

Cuter Than All the Other Babies

"Nora is so cute, she is cuter than all the other babies."
"I love Nora."
"Hello little sweetheart baby Nora."
"I am so glad that Nora is my baby sister."
"Nora is my favorite baby."

...

These are some of the things Mason says about/to his baby sister.
He loves her so much.
And, my goodness, she loves him.
All he has to do is come close to her and she is already smiling at him.

Here he is "reading" to her.

This might just be my favorite picture of all time.

A Leaky Eye and a Half Marathon

Want to know something weird about me?
This might be a little too much information and I may just scare you away.....
But, I'll tell you anyway.

When I run, I have a leaky eye.

Yes... a leaky eye.  Just one.
When the air outside is cool one of my eyes starts to cry.
And the tears just keep coming from that eye pretty much until I'm done running.
I've accepted it and gotten used to it over the years but it always gets me some funny looks from those around me and some concerned questions from people wondering if I am doing ok. I've had coaches take me out (on the soccer field) because of it and people stop me to console me as I'm trying to get my workout in.
You can imagine how this went over on the cool/windy Saturday morning while I was running the SOJO Half Marathon along side all those hard core runners.
I got some interesting looks from runners and even spectators as I wiped my tears (from my one eye) away.
Apparently I'm pretty emotional about my running.
Or so it appears.

Anyway,  I did finish the half marathon and it went really well.
I felt really good the entire time and I am so glad I did it.
I love the feeling after a race when you know you did your best.
I actually got 2nd place in my age group and 5th place in overall women (out of almost 300), which was a fun surprise!
For those that want numbers, I ran at a 7:20 pace and finished in 1 hour 36 minutes and 8 seconds.

How's that for a cheesy picture?  Good heavens.

I wanted to tell you about the race and thank you all so much for all of your kind words and support via comments, Facebook, text and phone calls after my last post.
I was super embarrassed posting those "before" pictures and sharing so much but I went ahead a pushed the "publish" button in hopes that I might help someone.
I couldn't believe the flood of kindness and support that ensued.
You are all wonderful.

Thank you.

Happy Monday!

Workout Wednesday - Running and a Confession

I consider myself a "runner"  ... mostly because I love running so much.
Running hasn't come naturally.
It's hard and I've had to really work at it over the years.
I am not a super fast runner and I don't enjoy training for marathons.
I've run one marathon, the Ogden Marathon here in Utah, and I am glad I did it but I think I will be sticking with half marathons from here on out.

I've run a bunch of half marathons and I love them.
When I train for them I still feel like I am challenging my body, without killing it.
I have one coming up this Saturday (The SOJO Half in South Jordan) and I'm excited...  and a little nervous.  I think I will always have these nerves before my races. Even if I am running a 5k.

How I got started...

When I was young my older sister would go running and I would ride my bike next to her.
When I got a little bit older, I ditched the bike and started running with her.
I started by running a few bocks with her, then she would continue on her run and I would run home.
Slowly, I would add distance, until I could run the whole thing with her.

She signed me up for my first 5k, a little local one in the town we grew up in.
It was hard but I loved it.

Since then I've gone through phases with my running.

I phased out a little bit after high school as I was travelling to nanny on the East Coast and teach English in China.

And I got a little chubby.

Cheeks-looking-like-they're-storing-food-for-later kind of chubby.

Hey, you really can't blame me... all that food in China is just sooo good. :)

When I got home I realized just how chubby I had gotten and I was fed up with feeling so yucky all the time, so...
I started running again.
I felt so much better when I started consistently running and doing things to help my body.
I felt better, partially because I got literally lighter... 25 lbs lighter... than I was. Did I really just admit that?
25 lbs is a lot of extra weight on my small 5 ft almost 2" frame.

But... I think the main reason that I felt better is because I was getting stronger and healthier.
And every day that I take the time to run, I feel even better.

I have one piece of advice for those of you just getting into running....

Start small.
Don't get discouraged.
Start by running around the block
Some days are harder than others.
You'll get there.
And it will eventually get easier.
Just start small.

It's Autumn Time

Happy Monday!

I hope you are indeed having a happy Monday.
We're loving fall and everything that comes along with it.

If only winter didn't have to come next. I despise the freezing cold.

But, I'll try to focus on the positive and the beauty that comes with this fun season.

Here's a picture from a recent session.
Aren't they such a cute family?

I loved the color scheme they had going on with their outfits.
So fun.

This last weekend we went to the farmer's market and the boys picked out a pumpkin for each member of our family.  They made sure to give daddy the biggest and Nora the smallest.

"Heavy!"

This is how Jimmy's glasses are 98% of the time. Right on the tip of his nose.

Nora just hung out here and watched.

Our Journey to Good Health

Davey and I are in kind of a "getting healthy" mode right now.
We watched a couple of interesting documentaries that kinda got us started.
I've always exercised (mostly running) but I've never worried too much about what I put into my body.

Well, that is changing now.
I was feeling pretty yucky for a while and Davey and I both noticed a lack in energy...
So, we're switching things up!
We're trying new recipes and limiting (not completely eliminating) processed foods/sugar.
The biggest change in what we eat is definitely all of the fruits and veggies we're eating now compared to before.

It's amazing how much better I feel when most of my meals are fruits and vegetables.

I've already noticed that I have more energy when I run, which I love.

I'm not nearly as tired (especially on my weekly long runs) when I haven't filled my body with processed, heavy, sugary foods.

Even though we can already tell a little bit of a difference, it doesn't make this easy.
Man, it's hard not to give in to all the yummy stuff everywhere!
Have you seen Pinterest lately?!?!

Like I said, we are "getting healthy," not completely eliminating everything that we love.

One step and a time.
We just want to feel better and get into better shape and
We could definitely use some support on this journey!

We'll keep you updated and share good recipes when we get them.
Do you have any tips or advice for us?

Happy October!

The boys and I are decorating the house Halloween style today.
They couldn't be more excited.
We were supposed to decorate yesterday but I told them that their room had to be cleaned first.
I went in their room (a couple of hours later) to get them for dinner, thinking that it just might be cleaned, and they were zonked out on the floor.  Awesome.
When they finally got it all clean and we had dinner, it was too late to decorate so, today is the day!
Mason has been talking about Halloween since August and now that it's October, well, that may just be all we hear about all month.
You should have seen the look on his face when I pulled out their new Halloween shirts.
Priceless.

Here's our attempt at a self-timer picture today.
I was tickling them to make them smile.
And it worked.
But they were also flailing like fishes.
I'll take what I can get.
Nora has a Halloween outfit too but she was sleeping at the time so we'll add that picture later.

Happy October!

-Do any of you have any tips on getting your kids to clean (when you ask)?

Newborn Photography - Utah Photographer

I had to post a picture from a recent session of this beautiful little.

Isn't he dreamy?
